Neolithic Cave Picnic

The landscapes around Moclín contain numerous cave complexes dating back 7,000 years or more. One of the caves, currently sealed due to its archaeological significance, has borne evidence of human habitation dating back 60,000 years.

We will take our guests on a relatively easy walk to one or more of the caves in the area to see neolithic cave paintings and enjoy a picnic in the surroundings taking in the magnificent views.

The walks present various levels of trickiness, from relatively easy to more of a scramble, and good walking shoes are essential. We can cater for most walkers, so please let us have an idea of your physical fitness before we undertake any of these walks.

THE PICNIC WILL INCLUDE:

  • Homemade tuna or vegetable empanada

  • Homemade quiche

  • Salads

  • Fresh fruit

  • Cake or shortbread

  • Wine, beer and/or soft drinks

  • Water!

Allow for between 2 - 3 hours for one of our cave picnics, and be prepared to be accompanied by Alfie, our small dog, and us as your guides!

€45 per head, minimum 2 people.

This is a spectacular 8 km circular route, it cuts down into the valley of the Rio Velillos. its medium difficulty, bearing in mind that the descent is 500 meters and therefore the ascent is the same.  Moclín Castle and Civil War trenches Tour

The castle is open to the general public only on Saturdays and Sundays for guided tours. However, we have private access to the castle for any guests who may wish to take a walk to the castle, and we usually follow this up with tapas in the local bar or lunch at Casa Higueras. We can also include visits to the Civil War trenches or one of the caves in the area.

Tapas Hikes

Discover Tapas in Granada

A variation on a standard tapas tour, this is for those people who like to cover some ground between sampling delicious tapas, enjoying a glass of something equally delicious and being introduced to some of Granada’s hidden corners.

We have two hikes available:

OPTION 1

4 HOUR PRIVATE HIKE taking in Sacromonte, the Albaicin, the Realejo and the Centre of Granada.

Over the course of the hike, we will visit 5 bars and include 5 drinks and sample 6 or 7 tapas, depending on appetite.

Along the route, we will point out places of historic and cultural interest, may stray from the route to see something different and generally provide you with a well-fuelled whistle-stop tour of a fascinating and beautiful city.

The hike will be private for between 2 - 4 people only.

€65 per head, minimum 2 people. All food, drink and transport included.

OPTION 2

3 HOUR PRIVATE HIKE taking in the Albaicin, part of the Realejo and the Centre of Granada.

We will visit 4 bars for 4 drinks and 5 - 6 different tapas. Along the way we will point out places of historic or cultural interest and recommend other places for you to visit during your stay.

The hike will be private for between 2 - 4 people only.

€50 per head, minimum 2 people.

The hikes include transport from Casa Higueras into Granada and return, all tapas and drinks and two fabulous guides in the shape of your hosts, Ian and Andrew.

Of course, if a hike seems like too much exercise and not enough eating, then we can tailor our gastronomic trips to suit your particular needs. As long as sherry, vermut and wine is involved….

PAELLA? OR NOT PAELLA?

Cooking Arroz

Learn to Cook Classic Arroz

There is a difference between what traditionally passes as Paella and the much more commonplace arroz (rice).

During your stay with us, if you would like to create a typical arroz dish with Ian and Andrew, then we would happily guide you through the process as a lunchtime class. This would obviously culminate in the eating of the results, washed down with a crisp white wine or an ice-cold fino.

Wine Tasting

 TryWine tasting

We know a number of very good bodegas in Granada Province, an area that is quickly getting a reputation for producing some very fine wines: reds, whites, rosados and sparkling wines. During the year, we do hold wine tasting and tapas events at venues in the village, and we would always invite any guests staying with us at those times.

Wild Swimming

GoWild Swimming

The Pantano de Colomera, a short drive from Casa Higueras, is a stunning location for kayaking and wild swimming. We have an inflatable kayak that you may use, and we have, ourselves, spent many an hour drifting on this glass-like lake marvelling at the silence and solitude of this very hidden corner of Andalucia.

VISIT THE SIERRA NEVADA AND GO…

Skiing

Skiing

The Sierra Nevada Ski Station is Europe’s southern-most ski resort, and is generally open from mid-November until mid-April. The skiing is great for the beginner and the intermediate, and with the occasional challenging run for the more experienced.

The resort is about 1 hour’s drive from Casa Higueras, and we can help you organise a day trip up to the slopes (ski passes, equipment hire etc) during the winter months.

 Granada Concierge

Our company, Granada Concierge, organises creative holidays in the village throughout the year, and if you would like to take part in a painting, cookery, dance or other creative activity while you are here, take a look at the Granada Concierge website for details of events and courses taking place. We can, of course, create bespoke experiences for you.

The above is a snap-shot of so many activities available in the area. We have written about many of our own expeditions in our blog, Two South of Granada.
